Daudet and Pajon World Champions at the BMX Worlds in Copenhagen 2011

After three beautiful days with challenge and elite time trial competitions at the BMX World Championships in Copenhagen, adrenaline and action filled the track today when the absolute BMX elite competed for the prestigious World Championships titles in what many believes to be the toughest field ever.

Winner,

elite men: Joris Daudet, France
Joris Daudet from France completed a perfect season with today’s World Championship title in a close and exciting race in the mens’ final where he beat both the defending world champion and reigning Olympic champion Maris Strombergs from Latvia, and New Zealander Marc Willers.

“I’ve had a really good season and my only tactics for today was to get a good start,” Daudet stated after the race. Daudet promised at the same time to do his absolute best in London next year.

Earlier this year Daudet won the European championship after being best in 12 out of 12 races in the series. In the second corner oo the track in the final, Daudet made a good move on Willers and went on the inside of the leading Willers and held the lead all the way to the finish line in one of the most thrilling World Championship races this year.

Winner, elite female: Mariana Pajon, Columbia
In the womens’ elite final Sarah Walker from New Zealand and Mariana Pajon from Columbia were favorites after the heats of the day. Another top favorite, the British London Olympics hope Shanaze Reade, missed her gate in the semifinals and therefore didn’t make it to the finals.

Mariana Pajon won all her heats of the day on the way to the finals, where the little Columbian flew down the start ramp and took the lead on the first straight. Although Sarah Walker pushed from behind the fast Columbian increased her lead and won her first world championship in the elite in great style – it was her 14th title overall as Pajon has won a long number of titles in the Challenge classes since she was 9 years old. “This year it was my time, it’s just great”, Pajon said after her win.

Junior championships
Today’s winner among the junior women was Melinda McLeod from Australia, who also won the time trials yesterday. McLeod’s double world championship was ensured even after she was hit by a moped just before the time trial yesterday. “I focused on doing my best in the competition, and I’m proud I was able to leave the accident behind”, McLeod stated after her double World Championship victory.

Alfredo Campo from Ecuador won gold in the junior men’s competition after winning all his heats of the day – a big step on his way to getting into great results in the men’s elite next year.

Danish best on home ground

With two men in the quarterfinals and the Danish champion Morten Therkildsen in the semi finals, Denmark had its best World Championship results ever in the BMX Supercross on home ground in Copenhagen. Therkildsen finished 14th overall and and Klaus Boegh Andresen 21st.

BMX World Championships: Surprises in Time Trial championships

Day 3 of the UCI BMX World Championships 2011 for the first time ever presented four time trials gold medals in the classes junior women, junior men, elite women and elite men. Australia ran off with the golden medals in both junior classes while British Shanaze Reade took home yet another gold in the elite women and Norway’s André Fossa Aguiluz surprised everyone when he took gold in front of all the favorites in elite men’s class.

Shanaze Reade takes 4th gold
At the elite womens’ competition it was not a surprise that the 23 year old Shanaze Reade took the gold. Speedy Reade is a top rider in her class with 3 senior World Championship titles to her name in BMX Supercross in only four years – today came the fourth.
Shanaze reade stated this Monday that she wouldn’t be racing in Copenhagen due to a wrist injury but on Wednesday she appeared in Copenhagen and today she won the first ever World championship time trial title in a time of 37,440. A performance she was very proud of:
“I’m so happy that that I won today. Time trials are not my biggest force, but I know the track in Copenhagen from training and racing and that was a great advantage,” Shanaze Reade said.

Great gold for Norway
Everything cyclists from Norway races turns to gold at the moment and the biggest surprise

today was when Norwegian André Fossa Aguiluz conquered the top of the podium from some of the biggest favorites in the men’s elite class. His bewilderment was obvious and to the question if he had expected to win, the 20 year old world champion answered:

“I’m just as surprised as everyone else here. I don’t get it. But tomorrow is yet another day with elite races and that will have my full concentration now.”

Australian junior golds: We’ll take it all in London 2012
The Australian team took both gold medals in the junior classes and the cheering audience showed without a doubt how big the success was for the people from Down Under. At the press conference afterwards, a humble 17 year old Darryn Goodwin said that he had just been doing what had to be done to win the medal. His 18 year old gold medal compatriot, Melinda McLeod, stated:
“There must be something in the water in Australia at the moment – we’re on the top of the world right now, and Australia will without a doubt dominate the BMX discipline at the Olympics next year in London.” It was McLeod’s 5 championship title but first in elite racing.

Saturday’s racing:

Top 32 elite women and junior women

Köpenhamnsk BMX-bana i världsklass

Heavy Focus on Digital Media at the UCI BMX World Championships 2011 in Denmark

A heavy focus on social media in the run-up to this summer’s UCI BMX World Championships in Copenhagen should give Denmark street credit throughout the world. The ambitious digital project is financially supported by the Branding Denmark Fund‘s main

objective is to assist its partners in reaching new target groups and turn their eyes to Denmark as an attractive and innovative tourist destination.

Today, the viral film ”BMX Bandits taking over Copenhagen” is launched through several channels in the digital media. By including all the well-known elements from the BMX sport, it appeals to the young underground groups in the entire world as well as to the many family fans of the BMX sport.

The regional tourist and event organisation, Wonderful Copenhagen, which is the main responsible partner for the staging of the UCI BMX World Championships 2011, has worked out an ambitious digital strategy to have the Danish branding values spread through social networks and viral media to strike when the iron is hot and the BMX-interest at its highest.

The digital project is financially supported by the Branding Denmark Fund. Chairman of the Board, Jørgen Tandrup says: “The Branding Denmark Fund’s purpose is to make Denmark known for all our positive values. Therefore, we are pleased to support the development of innovative types of communication, which are capable of reaching new target groups globally. Target groups, which then get to know about Denmark and subsequently may want to visit Denmark”.

Branding of Denmark
Fully in line with the primary objective of the film; to brand

and expose Denmark internationally as a nation of innovative, open-minded and creative people worth a visit, the film takes the BMX genre from the closed tracks and leads it through the streets of Copenhagen

CEO of Sport Event Denmark, Lars Lundov says: ”The BMX sport is a new Olympic sport, originating from the street culture. Therefore, it is only natural that the UCI BMX World Championships film introduces the sport in the streets, and not in a closed-off venue only. Taking the BMX sport from the venue to the streets of Copenhagen will further highlight Denmark as a nation of bike riders and add to Denmark’s image as a creative and green event destination”.

Managing Director of Wonderful Copenhagen, Lars Bernhard Jørgensen adds: ”It is an obvious opportunity to try something new. The fact that Denmark is hosting as many as three world cycling championships in 2011 enables us to exploit the synergy between the three events and reach target groups beyond our existing audience. And not to forget: to spread the image of Copenhagen as a “bike city”.

Sports events are good business
’Attention Economy’ is a relatively new word in Denmark, but it has become more and more clear how decisive a factor other people’s attention, or lack of the same, can have after the many new digital media have drastically changed the media image. After the global economic crisis took its beginning, and the battle to acquire (or keep) customers was intensified, major international sports events are seen as a guarantee for growth.

A part of Bike City Copenhagen
The UCI BMX World Championships 2011 event is part of the Bike City Copenhagen project (BCC), which HRH Crown Prince Frederik is protector for. Copenhagen is the only city in the world, which has been appointed Bike City by the UCI by now and between 2008 and 2011, Copenhagen is hosting 6 major international cycling events. Beyond the above event, the package includes among others the The UCI Road World Championships 2011 and the UCI Para-cycling World Championships 2011. Behind BCC (Bike City Copenhagen) stand as strong partners as the Danish Motor Union, the Danish Cycling Federation, Sport Event Denmark, The City of Copenhagen, The Capital Region of Denmark and Wonderful Copenhagen

UCI BMX World Championships 2011

2011 is shaping up to be a momentous cycling year in Copenhagen as the city is hosting both the UCI BMX World Championships and the UCI Road Cycling World Championships. The BMX event takes place

on July 28-31, just two months before the Road Worlds. Moreover, Roskilde (only 30 km from Copenhagen) has been awarded the UCI Para-cycling World Championships, also in 2011.

“With continual inspiration created through the UCI Bike City brand, Denmark is persistently looking for opportunities to strengthen the commitment to the sport of cycling. Hosting the 2011 UCI BMX World Championships and 2011 UCI Para-cycling World Championships in combination with the 2011 UCI Road World Championships offers a unique opportunity to create an unprecedented marketing platform that can serve as a benchmark for the sport in years to come. Also the sequence of these events will attract continual media exposure for cycling in Denmark,” says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.

“We presented a strong bid concept focusing on creating a breakthrough for BMX, establishing it as a dominant Olympic cycling discipline. We have hosted two very successful BMX Supercross World Cups in 2008 and 2009 as a part of the “Bike City Copenhagen” cooperation between Copenhagen and the UCI. A brand new BMX track in the centre of the city has received praise from BMX specialists, athletes and media and it is ranked among the best in the world,” says Jørgen Bitsch, president of the Danish Motor Union (Danish BMX Federation).

Lars Vallentin, Business Development Manager, Wonderful Copenhagen, the city’s tourism agency says: “The 2011 World Championships is crucial in building the right momentum for BMX. At our state of the art permanent BMX track Copenhagen is determined to create the best platform for the sport to grow and be promoted in the years leading up to the 2012 Olympics. Therefore we are also pleased to be hosting the BMX SX World Cup in 2010 before the best cycling year ever – 2011 in Copenhagen”.
