2011 is shaping up to be a momentous cycling year in Copenhagen as the city is hosting both the UCI BMX World Championships and the UCI Road Cycling World Championships. The BMX event takes place
on July 28-31, just two months before the Road Worlds. Moreover, Roskilde (only 30 km from Copenhagen) has been awarded the UCI Para-cycling World Championships, also in 2011.
“With continual inspiration created through the UCI Bike City brand, Denmark is persistently looking for opportunities to strengthen the commitment to the sport of cycling. Hosting the 2011 UCI BMX World Championships and 2011 UCI Para-cycling World Championships in combination with the 2011 UCI Road World Championships offers a unique opportunity to create an unprecedented marketing platform that can serve as a benchmark for the sport in years to come. Also the sequence of these events will attract continual media exposure for cycling in Denmark,” says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.
“We presented a strong bid concept focusing on creating a breakthrough for BMX, establishing it as a dominant Olympic cycling discipline. We have hosted two very successful BMX
Supercross World Cups in 2008 and 2009 as a part of the “Bike City Copenhagen” cooperation between Copenhagen and the UCI. A brand new BMX track in the centre of the city has received praise from BMX specialists, athletes and media and it is ranked among the best in the world,” says Jørgen Bitsch, president of the Danish Motor Union (Danish BMX Federation).
Lars Vallentin, Business Development Manager, Wonderful Copenhagen, the city’s tourism agency says: “The 2011 World Championships is crucial in building the right momentum for BMX. At our state of the art permanent BMX track Copenhagen is determined to create the best platform for the sport to grow and be promoted in the years leading up to the 2012 Olympics. Therefore we are also pleased to be hosting the BMX SX World Cup in 2010 before the best cycling year ever – 2011 in Copenhagen”.

Sorry for the late update, but I have been busy since I got back from USA. After 17 days on training camp in USA, I am now back in Denmark. Everything went pretty well I think. I really enjoyed being there and just focusing on the BMX part of my l
ife. The last couple of days in Chula Vista went really well and we had some good weather conditions as well. Thursday in the last week, the trip went from Chula Vista to Fresno. A drive for 7 hours. The reason of that was because we were going for 2 rounds of the NBL races. I have only raced one race this year, so I think it was really nice to do another race before going to the world cup in Copenhagen.
Since I got home I have done the last training and done things ready for the race on Friday. This morning we were on TV in the program called Good morning Denmark. So terrible to be in that program because I was up so early I was up at 05.15. I picked Morten Therkildsen up at Scandic and drived to the center where the program was going on. It went pretty good and we were done at 08.15.
At 11 a clock today we were on the Supercross track, testing it as the first persons. I really love the track. Everything looks perfect on that track. We only raced on the first straight but it was just so good!
Tomorrow we are going on TV again, Tomorrow it is the program Aftenshowet on DR 1 about 19.20
I feel here the last couple of days before the race that I am 100 % ready. I had a super training today at the track and I am looking forward to the next days. Thursday we have practice on the whole track,
Friday it is time trail and Saturday race. I hope so much that I can be inside top 64 and be in the race Saturday. I just know that I am 100 % ready now.
Saturday May 8 is the BIG day for the world’s best BMX SX riders. Copenhagen is getting ready for great BMX SX action – for the third consecutive year. The biggest stars in the BMX sport will come to Copenhagen and fight for victory and crucial Wor
ld Cup and Olympic points.
Who will win?
Who will go all the way? Among the elite men Donny Robinson (winner in Copenhagen in 2008), Sam Willoughby (world no 1) and Olympic champion Maris Strombergs are favorites.
Shanaze Reade might take the top spot for the third year in a row in Copenhagen among the women. However, she will undoubtedly get strong
competition from, among others, le Corguille (world no 1) and Australia’s hope Buchanan. Read the latest on the participants on our web site.
Copenhagen rated the best BMX venue in Europe
With the permanent upgrading of the Copenhagen BMX venue, including both 5 and 8 meter ramps, the international cycling union, UCI, has rated the Copenhagen BMX venue as the best in Europe.
UCI track builder Tom is back in Copenhagen finishing the track together with local experts. Things are looking good and new photos have just been uploaded to our popular Facebook group with more than 500 members from around the world.
These days, the BMX venue in Copenhagen is being upgraded with a number of new, permanent facilities, including two start ramps (5 and 8 meters). According to the International Cycling Union, UCI, this upgrading makes the venue the best in Europe.
“There’s no doubt that
the Copenhagen BMX venue is the best BMX venue in Europe. With the investment of having two permanent start ramps, not only is it the most versatile BMX track (suited both for elite and youngsters) ever built, but it also show cases the future of BMX. This is what many tracks will look like 10 years from now!”
The UCI are excited to once again bring the BMX Supercross World Cup to the Copenhagen BMX venue, and of course the absolute highlight will be when the BMX World Championships return in 2011,” says Johan Lindström, BMX Sports Coordinator, UCI.
